Montreal Temple Open House Begins
Montreal Canada Gazette 19May00 D1
By Harvey Shepherd: The Gazette

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA -- The open house for the Montreal Quebec Temple starts tomorrow, according to this article in the Montreal Gazette. The Gazette sent Shepherd to cover the open house and take the tour available for the press yesterday.

Most of the article gives background information on LDS beliefs about Temples. Until the scheduled dedication of the Montreal Temple, church members were in the Toronto, Canada Temple district. About 8,500 Church members in Quebec, as well as Ottawa, Hawkesbury and Cornwall in Eastern Ontario, and parts of Vermont and some other U.S. communities. The district includes a total of 12,000 to 15,000 Church members.

The article also reports that Quebec has seen significant growth over the past 20 years. In 1981, there were 3,246 Church members in the province. By 1990, the membership had risen to 6,800. Now, according to LDS Church officials, there are 8,500 members in Quebec.

The open house will continue next week and the dedication is scheduled for June 4th.
