Former LDS Doctor Seeks New Trial
(Northern California Briefs)
Modesto CA Bee (AP) 24Mar00 D2

FAIRFIELD, CALIFORNIA -- A Fairfield, California obstetrician and former LDS leader who was convicted in 1997 of sexually abusing two female patients is seeking a new trial. Dr. John Parkinson was convicted of 16 counts of sexual abuse and two counts of practicing medicine without a license. He is seeking a new trial and will get a hearing April 12th on his request.

Parkinson's attorney, George Cotsirilos Jr., asked a judge for a new trial, saying that one of the jurors on the original trial failed to disclose that she had a past working relationship with Parkinson.

Parkinson has been under house arrest pending a ruling on his appeal of the conviction. He was sentenced to six years in prison for the alleged abuse.
