MSI Special: MSI Ends Year Up 3.4%; Outperforms Dow, NASDAQ

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Mormon Stock Index, continued its exceptional performance, ended 2001 up 3.4% while every other major index was down at least twice that for the year. And for the last quarter of the year, the index rose more than 25% in a quick recovery from its post-September 11th low, and also outperformed the other major indices, except for the NASDAQ. The MSI, established in July 2000, tries to measure the performance of Mormon executives in the business world.

Since its inception, the Mormon Stock Index has grown from 17 companies to 44, including eight added in December alone. It has included a total of 58 different companies at one time or another. The index includes companies with a market capitalization of at least $100 million which also have a Mormon executive in their top management (generally the managers listed in SEC filings).

Mormon News' Kent Larsen says its surprising that the index has performed so well, "I don't know what to think. Either being Mormon has a much stronger effect on management performance than I thought, or the index has been very fortunate in which stocks it chose when."

Regardless of what it represents, the index finished 2001 at 112.34, up 3.4% from its December 31, 2000 close at 108.66. During that same time period, the best performance among the major indices came from the Dow Jones Industrials, which fell 7.1% for the year. The MSI looks even better when compared to its reference date, December 31, 1999. Set at 100 as of that date, the index is up 12.3% for those two years, while the New York Stock Exchange Composite, the best performer among the major indices for that period, is off 9.3%

The Mormon Stock Index also performed well in the fourth quarter of this year, rising 25.7% and outshining the Dow, NYSE, and S&P 500. The NASDAQ outperformed the MSI, rising 30.1% in the last three months of 2001.
