FAIR Announces the Third Annual Mormon Apologetics Conference

PROVO, UTAH -- The Foundation for Apologetic Information &Research (FAIR) is proud to sponsor the Third Annual Mormon Apologetics Conference in Provo, Utah, August 16 & 17. This year's conference is titled "The Book of Mormon: Modern Witnesses for an Ancient Record" and will explore topics dealing with the authenticity of this unique book of scripture.

This year's conference features speakers from the Foundation for Apologetic Information &Research (FAIR), the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS) and the Church Educational System (CES). Featured speakers include Daniel Peterson, Chairman of the Institute for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts (ISPART) at Brigham Young University; John Tvedtnes, Associate Director of ISPART; Matthew Roper, Research Assistant at ISPART; John Gee, Assistant Research Professor at ISPART; Louis Midgley, BYU Emeritus Professor; Scott Woodward, BYU Professor of Microbiology; L. Ara Norwood of FAIR; Brant Gardner of FAIR; Benjamin McGuire of FAIR and Ross David Baron of CES. Topics will range from DNA studies to Hebrew writing patterns found in the book. One of the most anticipated presenters is S. Kent Brown of Brigham Young University, discussing recent discoveries on the Saudi Arabian peninsula representing the first archeological evidence of a previously unknown ancient site mentioned only in the Book of Mormon.

"The Book of Mormon represents the most unique aspect of Mormonism and sets The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apart from traditional Christianity," said Scott Gordon, President of FAIR. "From the day that Joseph Smith declared he had received the book from an angel, engraved on gold plates, people have either proclaimed its divine origins or decried it as a fraud. It is truly the keystone of our religion." Scientists and scholars have unearthed a tremendous amount of evidence that supports the authenticity of the book. This conference will explore a portion of that evidence and present the most up-to-date research available.

This year's conference will be held at the Woman's Council of Provo Building, 310 West 500 North in Provo. The Friday session will begin at 10:00 am on August 17th, and will end at 5:00 pm. Saturday's sessions will begin at 9:00 am, and will continue until 4:00 pm. Seating is first-come, first-serve and advance reservations are recommended. The registration fee of $35 ($50 for couples) includes admission and lunch on Friday and Saturday. Interested parties can register on-line at www.fair-lds.org or by phone at (801) 861-8430 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am 4:30 pm.

The Foundation for Apologetic Information &Research (FAIR) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing answers to criticisms of LDS doctrine, belief and practice. FAIR's mission is to assist lay members and scholars in response to attacks on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, its doctrines, teachings and leaders. FAIR publishes articles and books that defend the Church, operates a busy Web site that receives thousands of visitors per day, and sponsors research projects and conferences that provide the LDS scholarly community with an outlet to disseminate information into the hands of members. FAIR is funded by the generosity of its members and contributors, now grown to more than 1,000.
