LDS Family Looses Two Girls in Tragic House Fire
Miami Herald 19Dec99 D2
Herald Staff and Wire Reports

KORONA, FLORIDA -- Two young LDS girls were killed and their mother severely burned in a fire in their rental house north of Daytona Beach, Florida. 10-year-old Shaleem Reyes and her 15-month-old sister Marilyn were killed and their mother, Mira Reyes, 34, suffered second- and third-degree burns on Thursday, December 16th.

The Reyes family moved to Korona several years ago from Biscayne, Florida, where Rigoberto Reyes once served as Branch President, and his wife, Mira, was the Relief Society President, according to Biscayne church member George Clay. "They were a very close family," Clay said. "She was an excellent cook and made a wicked paella."

Rigoberto Reyes was at school in Jacksonville, Florida at the time of the fire, and his 19-year-old son Joshua Reyes was also at school in Lake Mary, Florida. Two other siblings, Jalem Reyes, 6, and Mel Reyes, 12, were also at home, but escaped the fire. Mel was injured falling from the roof of the home in his escape.

Their mother, Mira, suffered her burns trying to save her daughters from the fire. She ended up in the burn unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire.
