LDS Boxing Hall-of-Famer Honored with Rec Center

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Gene Fullmer, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a Boxing hall of Fame inductee, was honored recently in Salt Lake County. The county will open the Gene Fullmer Fitness and Recreation Center on Friday. Fullmer, who boxed in the 1950s and 1960s, will be at the grand opening with his family.

The recreation center is near the West Jordan Park where the teen-age Fullmer participated in numerous boxing exhibitions. Instead of taking the money earned home, Fullmer gave it to the city for building park facilities.

Now, Fullmer and brothers run a youth boxing club in Riverton. "It's free, no charge," Fullmer said. "Kids can come and go as they please."
