University of Wisconsin Gets LDS Guard

MADISON, WISCONSIN -- Ricky Bower, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard from Nampa, Idaho made an oral commitment to join the University of Wisconsin's men's basketball team. An opening left by Julian Swartz, a Waukesha South graduate who decided to sit out this season but will return in 2001, allowed Bower to fill the scholarship slot. Bower recently returned from a two-year mission in Poland for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"There are a lot of good people (at Wisconsin)," said Bower, 22. "There is a lot of integrity in the coaching staff. They're good solid people and that's the same way with the players. They're good solid people and I enjoy simply being around them."

Bower will have three years of eligibility and plans to quickly send his letter of intent. College coaches are prohibited from commenting on recruits until the letters of intent are received. Bower received other offers from Vanderbilt and Southern California. Utah coach Rick Majerus was interested in Bower if he returned to junior college for another season.

"Initially, I thought I would sign early with them, but then an opportunity showed itself and they wanted me for this year," Bower said. He hit 48% of his three-point attempts in the 1997-'98 season.
