Hatch tells Utah GOP he'll run for president
Deseret News 19Jun99 L1
By Diane Urbani: Deseret News staff writer

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, a member of the LDS Church, has apparently decided to try running for president. Hatch reportedly told a meeting of Republican party leaders on Friday, June 18th that he will enter the race.

In speaking at the meeting, Hatch told the group that the Republican nomination was "George W. Bush's to lose," and that he intends to be ready and able to step in should that happen. Former Hatch aid Carol Nixon, who was at the meeting, reported, "When he said, 'I am running for president of the United States,' it sent a shiver through my being." Rep. Merrill Cook, R-Utah, merely said, "He's moving forward."
